Make Sure your Tyres are Legal this Tyre Safety Month

October is Tyre Safety Month, a campaign designed by TyreSafe to raise awareness of the importance of tyre safety.

Formula One Autocentres are committed to ensuring that your tyres are legal and roadworthy, which is why we are offering free tyre checks at all of our branches this October.

The Tyre Safety Month campaign aims to encourage motorists to get in to the habit of regularly checking their tyres in order to reduce the number of tyre-related incidents that occur on our roads. TyreSafe's survey found that more than 27% of people replaced their tyres when they were already illegal, meaning that in 2016 there could be as many as 10 million illegal and dangerous tyres on the road*.

Driving on illegal tyres can result in three penalty points on your license and a fine of £2,500 per illegal tyre. If you are found to be driving on illegal tyres and have an accident, your car insurance may be invalid. As well as posing a legal risk, driving on illegal tyres is highly dangerous and over the last five years, 5,677 casualties were due to tyre-related incidents*.

TyreSafe recommend checking your tyre tread depth, tyre pressures and the condition of your tyres every three weeks. You should ensure that your pressures are correct, there are no signs of damage and your tread meets the legal minimum of 1.6mm.

Formula One Autocentres would recommend replacing your tyres when tread drops below 3mm, as at this point your gripping capabilities are drastically reduced, meaning that stopping distances will be longer and your safety in wet conditions is compromised.

To help raise awareness of tyre safety and to ensure that all of our customers feel confident that they are driving on legal tyres, Formula One Autocentres will be offering free tyre checks throughout October. During these checks, our team of specialists will inspect for visual damage, check your tread depth and tyre pressures and ensure that your wheels are correctly aligned.
