What’s your car trying to tell you? A guide to unusual sounds

Thursday 15th May 2025

We’ve all felt that sudden jolt of panic when you’re driving along, focused on the road, when your car suddenly starts making a strange noise. A subtle rumble that wasn’t there yesterday. A distinct clunk that sends shivers through you. You don’t catch it at first, so you try and listen out for it again. The noise might be sporadic, so it’s easy to ignore. But what if your car is telling you something isn’t right?

At Formula One Autocentres, we’re here when things go wrong – but understanding how your car normally performs can help you stay safer on the road, avoid costly repairs, and allow you to drive with greater peace of mind. In this article, you’ll gain the confidence to recognise the signs and when to visit us

This list is not exhaustive or definitive. If you’re concerned about any new noises from your car, speak to the expert team at a Formula One Autocentres garage to find out what solution suits you.?

How should you react when you hear unusual noises from your car?

The first thing to remember is not to panic. If the noise startles you, find a safe place to pull over, then assess where you think the noise could have come from. If you’ve been putting off getting your car checked or serviced, this is your warning sign to book it in for an assessment with Formula One Autocentres. Many of our checks are free, so for peace of mind that you can drive safely, don’t delay getting your car checked.

For newer drivers or those new to car ownership, any unfamiliar sound can feel intimidating. “Is it serious? Can I keep driving? Who do I speak to about it?” We get it. And we hear all sorts of worries like this from both new and experienced drivers.? To avoid any potential problems, regular maintenance from full or interim services can reduce the likelihood of your car making alarming noises.

What could be causing the noise?

“It sounds like something’s scraping or grinding when I brake”

This is often a sign of worn brake pads. The grinding sound is the metal plate contacting the rotor, which indicates it needs replacing. Ignoring this can lead to reduced braking power, damage to your rotors –?which is an expensive fix – and compromised safety. If you hear clicking when you brake, there could be a further problem with your braking system. In either case, get your brakes checked for free at your closest Formula One Autocentres and our technicians can identify any issues.?

“I hear a high-pitched squeal when I start the car or accelerate”

Any high-pitched squeal can overstimulate your senses and make driving feel very stressful. A squealing noise could be linked to a loose or worn alternator belt –?also known as a fan belt, drive belt or serpentine belt. It’s an integral part of your car as it transfers the power from your engine to other parts of your car. The belt might simply need to be realigned, or potentially replaced, due to being worn down from friction and heat.?

“There’s a continuous clunking or thumping sound, especially over bumps”

This might be related to issues with your suspension and any worn components. The suspension system needs to be in peak condition for a comfortable ride and proper handling, so if you ignore warning noises from the suspension components, it can lead to poor steering control, uneven tyre wear, and a bumpy journey.?

It may also link to your tyres or wheel bearings if you can hear a rumble when you’re travelling straight. This is because the bearings that usually keep your wheels moving smoothly are experiencing more friction, or your tyres aren’t in optimal condition.?

“Why is there a clicking noise when my engine is off?”

This usually signifies your engine is cooling down – it’s nothing to worry about.?

However, hissing or sizzling implies a deeper issue, such as a leak through cracked hoses. We recommend not investigating this yourself and taking your car to your nearest Formula One Autocentres garage for an expert to take a look to discover why your engine is making a noise.

Something grinds and groans when I turn my steering wheel”

This could indicate a problem with your power steering system, such as low fluid, a failing pump, or a wheel bearing starting to fade. These issues can affect your car’s steering and make it harder to handle and control. Don’t ignore these noises, especially as neglecting the cause could damage the power steering pump further. Any issue with your steering can be flagged during a full service.

“I hear rattling underneath my car, but I can’t see anything when I stop”

Rattling implies you have a loose exhaust system. It could be a faulty bracket or an issue with your catalytic converter. If you want to investigate on your own first, make sure your car has cooled down to avoid burning yourself, then try shaking accessible parts of the underneath of your car to see if you can spot anything that doesn’t seem right.?

“There’s loud noises coming from the gearbox whenever I change gears”

This is likely related to your transmission system in a manual petrol or diesel vehicle or issues with your clutch, and it can be tricky to tell which is at fault. Changing gears should be a smooth and effortless process with no noise. Clunky gears are annoying to deal with on every journey, and if you ignore this issue, it could transform into a larger, more costly fix.?

“I hear squeaking when my windscreen wipers turn on”

Even though your windscreen is wet from the rain, if your windscreen wiper blades aren’t lubricated or cleaned, they can make awful noises due to increased friction. Another annoying problem to listen to, but there are many ways to stop your windshield wipers from squealing.?
