Can you insure your vehicle without an MOT?
Monday 17th January 2022
Wondering if you can insure your car without an MOT? The answer is yes - you can technically insure your car without an MOT. However, in the UK, it is illegal to drive without your MOT. Find out more from our helpful guide now.
Does my car insurance become invalid once my MOT expires?
Usually, as long as your car is roadworthy, your insurance should still be valid. Roadworthiness refers to the safety and proficiency of your vehicle. To be classified as roadworthy, these parts of your car need to be functioning correctly:
- Hazard and fog lights
- Front and rear lights
- Brakes and brake fluid
- Engine oil level
- Windscreen wipers
- Indicators
- Car battery
This means if you are caught driving without an MOT, but you had insurance – you would only get fined for the MOT, not insurance. However, there are exceptions– it is important to check your insurance policy specifically. Some policies may state your car insurance can become invalid if your MOT expires, so always best to double check! If you are caught driving without an MOT, you could face a fine of up to £1000 and your vehicle could be impounded.
Can I make a claim without MOT?
In theory, not having an MOT shouldn’t stop you from making a claim – however, this issue is a bit tricky. For instance, if your insurance is still valid without an MOT, any car pay-outs will be significantly smaller, as your car automatically decreases in value without an MOT. Also, your pay-out will most likely take longer if you don’t have an MOT, as your insurance will do a pretty lengthy investigation to determine how much they will pay you.
Another thing to consider when claiming without an MOT, if you are involved in an accident that was your fault, and your vehicle is not legal to drive on the roads, this could have many repercussions legally. Not only do you face fines, but this issue gets even more complicated if passengers were injured or killed during this accident, as not having an MOT could become a more serious offence – and you could be facing a jail sentence.
