Monday 12th February 2024

Have you been involved in an incident with another driver who has been driving recklessly on the UK’s road network? You could play a vital contribution in improving the safety of British roads by reporting the incident to the police. Formula One Autocentres takes you through how you can report dangerous driving.

What is dangerous driving?

Dangerous driving (also known as careless driving) is a type of driving that involves putting you and other road users at risk. The Crown Prosecution Service defines dangerous driving as: “Driving that falls far below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver and it would be obvious that driving in that way would be dangerous.”

Examples of dangerous driving

There are plenty of examples that could be classed as dangerous driving, such as speeding or driving under the influence of drink or drugs. Other examples of dangerous driving can include:

  • Ignoring road signs and traffic lights.
  • Using a mobile phone while you’re driving.
  • Reading or looking at a map.
  • Driving when injured or being unable to see clearly.
  • Talking to and looking at a passenger.
  • Should I report dangerous driving?

Yes, if you have witnessed another motorist driving dangerously, then you should immediately contact the police on their non-emergency number 101 or by submitting a report online. When you are reporting any incidents of dangerous driving, make sure your vehicle is parked in a safe place with the engine turned off before calling the police.

What penalties are available for dangerous driving?

The penalties for dangerous driving are categorised into five different offences. This is dependent on the offence caused, as well as the incident’s severity and circumstances. Here’s an overview of the penalties you could face for dangerous driving:

Offence

Penalty points

Causing death by dangerous driving

3 to 11

Furious driving

3 to 9

Causing serious injury by dangerous driving

3 to 11

Careless and inconsiderate driving

Can you go to jail for dangerous driving?

Yes, although this is dependent on the circumstances and severity of the incident. You may be required to retake your driving test, receive a 12-month driving ban or in certain circumstances, you may be sent to jail for an extended period.
