Are your brakes making noises? Not sure if something needs to be replaced? Worried about how long your car may be in the garage? Find out the estimated time of your brake pad installation, factors which could extend this time, and how you can get your brakes checked for free.
Typical brake service times
Brake pads are critical for your car’s safety. All work on your brake system must be fulfilled by someone proficient, qualified and in the right environment. You can fix your brake pads yourself, but if you’re unsure, get them checked at your local branch of Formula One Autocentres.
Depending on your vehicle and its condition, a brake pad replacement should take between 30 to 90 minutes per axle. Axles are dealt with in pairs – your two front wheels are attached to the front axle and your two rear wheels are attached to the rear axle. We’ll later explore some factors which may affect how long it takes to change your vehicle’s brake pads.
If you’re doing it yourself, it can take a few hours with mechanical expertise, possibly half a day at most. However, if you’re unsure which brake pads to buy or don’t feel confident to fit them yourself, don’t take the risk.
Step-by-step process your mechanic follows to replace brake pads
- Initial inspection (10-15 minutes): Your mechanic raises the car and removes the wheels to inspect the current state of the brake pads, rotors and other components.
- Removing the old brake pads (10-20 minutes): Once the wheel is off, your mechanic will unbolt the calliper – the bit that holds the brake pads. This is fiddly if the bolts are rusted and may take longer.
- Inspecting and cleaning (10-15 minutes): The mechanic will then check your rotors for any damage or wear, and whether they need to be replaced – extra time will be needed if the car needs new rotors. The callipers are cleaned, dirt and dust are removed, and brake fluid is topped up.
- Installing new brake pads (15-20 minutes): New pads are placed into the calliper bracket and the calliper is reattached to its original position. Your mechanic lubricates parts of the calliper for smoother movement.
- Reassembling the wheels and testing (10-15 minutes): The wheels are reattached, and the car is lowered. Your new brake pads are tested to ensure the system works correctly.
If everything goes smoothly, you’ll have your car back in no time. But if there are issues with rust, stuck parts or rotor damage, it may take longer.
Factors which affect brake installation
Every car is different and treated on a case-by-case basis. Your repair time may be longer or shorter due to multiple factors:
- how complex the repair is
- how busy the garage is
- the availability of parts
- unexpected issues and additional services (such as other problems uncovered in the repair process)
- the type of vehicle
Formula One Autocentres will always ask you for prior consent before undertaking additional repairs.
If you’re on top of your car maintenance, this process is usually a lot quicker and potentially a lot cheaper.
Why brake checks are important
Brakes are the heart of safety in your car. Not only do you need to comply with safety regulations and legal standards, you also don’t want to risk your life, the lives of your passengers or other road users. If you hear your brakes squeaking or your brake warning light is on, it might be time for new brakes.
When your brake pads are in good condition, you’ll get a gentler ride, it improves the value of your car, and you get peace of mind knowing you’re a responsible driver.
Can I change brake pads at home?
Yes, it’s possible to change your brake pads at home. DIY replacements are easier on your wallet but they can be complex and awkward if you don’t have a decent level of mechanical knowledge and the right tools.
However, it’s not a task you should take up if you’re not confident. And it’s not worth the risk.
If you’re unsure how to replace them yourself, don’t fancy forking out for all of the bits and bobs, or you’d prefer to pick your car up in a couple of hours, find your local Formula One Autocentres branch or speak with one of our technicians.
