what are anti lock brakes

Brake fluid, also known as hydraulic fluid, is the liquid chemical solution that is used in the braking system of cars. When you press the brake pedal in your car, brake fluid transfers this force into pressure to the front and rear brakes and stops the vehicle. Brake fluid is responsible for amplifying your foot’s force on the brake pedal. It works because liquids cannot be compressed. Without brake fluid, you simply would not be able to use your car brakes. Hydraulic braking systems are the most common and the most effective however, they’re only any good if they’re maintained properly

So, it’s important to know how much brake fluid your car needs and how often it should be topped up to ensure your car brakes are used effectively.

How much brake fluid does my car need?

To find out the required amount of brake fluid for your car, consult your vehicle handbook for the correct information depending on the make and model of your car. However, as a general rule, most vehicles use DOT4 which requires around 1 litre of brake fluid.

Which brake fluid should I use for my car?

There are many different types of brake fluid that can be used for your car. These can be grouped under two headings. Glycol based and silicone based.

  • Glycol based – this includes brake fluids such as DOT3, DOT4 and Super DOT4.
  • Silicone based – this includes brake fluid DOT5.

The term ‘dots’ refers to the different types of brake fluids’ boiling points. Generally, the lower the ‘DOT’ number, the lower the fluid’s boiling point. Depending on the type of car and its usage, this will determine which level ‘DOT’ you’ll need for your brake fluid. For example, a high-performance car used for racing will more than likely require a brake fluid with a higher ‘DOT rating because of its lower boiling point.

How often should I change my brake fluid?

It is recommended by most vehicle manufacturers that you should change your brake fluid every 2 years, regardless of mileage.  Although the fluid may look okay, it should still be changed. The best and most definitive way to know when you should change your brake fluid is to check your vehicle’s manual. Even if you are not changing your brake fluid, it is important you regularly check it. Generally, it is recommended you should be giving your brake fluid a brief inspection every few weeks.

It is important that you never mix brake fluid types. This is because they can react badly with each other and corrode your brake system. You should also be aware that DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid can soak up paint, therefore it is important to not get either of these on your car. To avoid possible water contamination, we recommend purchasing new brake fluid whenever you change or top up your brake fluid.
