How to choose which tyres to buy?
Tyres are the only part of your vehicle that has direct contact with the road. They can affect your vehicle’s performance in many ways, from steering and braking to overall fuel efficiency – that’s why it is important to keep your tyres in good condition and buy wisely.
When should I change my tyres?
In most cases, you should replace your tyres as soon as you see signs of wear and tear or if you notice a decline in performance. We recommend changing your tyres when the tread depth is at 3mm, before you drop to the legal minimum requirement of 1.6mm. Ideally you will change all four tyres at the same time, however this may not always be the case as front and rear tyres can wear at different rates, depending on your vehicle.
What are the different types of tyres?
Summer tyres
Summer tyres are fitted as standard in the UK and may be the default choice given their great all-round performance. Summer tyres offer the highest grip during dry and warmer conditions but can also operate safely in wet weather.
Winter tyres
Winter tyres feature tread blocks with small cuts known as ‘sipes’ that help improve traction on snow and ice. They provide greater control on the road’s surface, even in the slipperiest of conditions. You may consider winter tyres if you live in an area that experiences severe weather or you drive longer distances in bad weather.
All-season tyres
All-season tyres, also known as all-weather tyres, are designed to withstand elements of each season, whilst maintaining the safety and performance of your vehicle. These tyres tend to be a popular choice for many motorists as they reduce the hassle of changing your tyres every six months, offer an easy drive and can save you money. However, you are more likely to experience enhanced performance of your vehicle if you choose season-specific tyres.
Run flat tyres
Run flat tyres are specifically constructed to allow you to continue driving at a reduced speed for a limited number of miles on a puncture. The purpose of a run flat tyre is to get you to your local garage without having to repair or change your tyre at the roadside.
