where can i service my car

A clicking noise coming from your car could be caused by a number of different problems, ranging from minor to more serious. Our guide will help you to diagnose the cause of the clicking noise and what repairs are needed.

Why is my car clicking but not starting?

If your car is clicking when you try to start it, listening to the type of click can help you to diagnose the issue.

Rapid clicking but engine won’t start: A fast, repeated clicking sound when you start the engine is usually the sign of a low battery. It’s caused by the starter relay attempting to engage without enough power to turn on the starting motor. Book a free battery check to assess the health of your battery today.

One loud click: This indicates a faulty starter. If you experience this issue, then book an appointment at your nearest Formula One Autocentres branch to diagnose whether the starter motor, starter solenoid or relay is the issue and have it replaced.

A click and a grinding sound: This could indicate a more serious problem such as a seized engine or damaged flywheel ring gear. If this happens, avoid repeated starting attempts as this could create further damage and contact your nearest garage.

Why does my car click when turning?

If your car only clicks when turning, particularly on tight corners and when the steering wheel is at full lock its likely to be due to the constant velocity joint. It sits at the end of the driveshaft and allows power to reach the wheels as they turn. The joint is housed in rubber. Over time the rubber can deteriorate and grease, dirt and debris can enter the joint causing a clicking sound.

Continuing to drive on a worn joint could eventually cause damage to the driveshaft and make repairs more costly. Leaving this issue unaddressed will eventually lead to drive failure. So, if you experience clicking when you turn, it’s best to book in to a Formula One Autocentres branch for repairs.

Why does my car click when the engine is running?

If your car is making a clicking sound when you’re driving it could be caused by one of the following reasons:

Valve train issue: A steady ticking sound that speeds up when the engine revs is often caused by low oil levels, low oil pressure or a worn lifter, rocker arm or camshaft lobe. This can be an easy but urgent fix as driving with low or no oil can cause catastrophic engine damage.

Electrical relay issue:  A fuel pump relay, main relay or other electrical relay switching on and off can result in a clicking noise from under the bonnet. Some clicking can be completely normal and not a cause for concern. However, if your relays are clicking quickly and continuously, it can suggest a relay fault or wiring issue which can be diagnosed and repaired at your local Formula One Autocentres branch.

Can I drive with a clicking noise?

Whether it’s safe to drive with a clicking noise depends on the cause. A clicking noise when attempting to start isn’t dangerous, but it may leave you stuck on the roadside and unable to drive. While a worn constant velocity joint is unlikely to suddenly fail, it can cause further damage if you continue to drive without addressing the issue. Driving with low or no oil should never be attempted as it can cause complete engine failure. If you’re unsure, we recommend having your vehicle checked before embarking on a long journey.
