Winter car security tips

Friday 22nd November 2024

With the winter months in full swing, you may think your vehicle is less vulnerable to theft. However, this is not the case. According to car security company Tracker, car thefts have increased by 25% during winter. Knowing how to keep your car safe and secure will minimise the risk of theft.

Our vehicle security tips will reduce the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen during the winter months.

Install a dashcam

A dashcam fitted inside your car can deter thieves looking to steal your vehicle. When buying a dashcam ensure it has anti-theft features such as 'standby mode', 'parking mode' and motion sensors that will start recording when a thief attempts to open the doors, rams the car or breaks a window, even when the engine is switched off. Installing a dashcam may reduce your insurance premium as footage can be used as evidence in an insurance claim.

Park in a secure garage or well-lit location

Do you have a secure garage or drive? If you have the luxury of having a driveway or garage, you should leave your car there at night. Having automatic gates can also provide additional security, reducing the risk of thieves stealing your vehicle. Alternatively, if you don’t have a driveway or garage, park your car in a well-lit area near streetlights with CCTV cameras.

Don’t leave your car unattended

Is your engine running while you are de-icing your car? While it can be tempting to leave your car unattended with your engine idling, a thief could easily take this opportunity to drive off before you have a chance to intervene.

Did you know it’s illegal to leave your car unattended when warming it up in cold weather? It also means your insurance policy is invalidated. We recommend staying inside your car when warming up the engine to prevent thieves from stealing your vehicle.

Keep your keys out of sight

One way car criminals may decide to steal your car is to take your keys when you least expect it. Potential scenarios where thieves may take your car keys include:

  • Hanging your jacket or coat in a public space.
  • Leaving your keys on a cafe table.
  • Placing them on a key hook near the front door.

Keeping your keys as far out of view as possible ensures you avoid thieves from cloning them and taking your car.
