Do caravans need an MOT?

Tuesday 1st March 2022

In short, caravans do not need an MOT. This is because caravans are fundamentally different to cars and other vehicles that require a regular MOT by law. In fact, caravans come with their own set of rules when it comes to servicing.

Should I service my caravan?

It is very important that your Caravan is regularly serviced but not required by law. A service is when a vehicle has an in-depth mechanical assessment to ensure that everything is working as it should.

There are various types of services you can book – for example, a full-service checks everything in your vehicle from the wheel alignment to the pollen filter replacement. Alternatively, you could opt for an interim service - this checks the very essential aspects of your vehicle function. Though it’s not required by law to ensure your caravan is serviced, it can be beneficial for not only the safety of the vehicle, but also to prolong the life span of your caravan. Learn more about why you should service your caravan.

What does a caravan service involve?

Caravans are built differently to cars, which means they will need a few additional checks. The mechanic will most likely also need to test the kitchen and bathroom appliances – including the gas systems, the electrical systems, fire safety, carbon monoxide checks and more.

Servicing your car

Equally, the car towing your caravan needs to be in tip top condition. Breaking down on the motorway is bad enough – but breaking down with a caravan is never an ideal situation! Ensure your car is in tip top condition, by getting it regularly serviced and keeping on top of your MOT. The car towing the caravan will most likely also need reinforced tyres to tow such a heavy load.

How often should you change your caravan tyres?

A caravan will require reinforced tyres – by having stronger tyres, you lessen the risk of breaking down when towing your caravan. For a single axle caravan, the wheels need to be strong enough to support half the weight of the whole caravan. As a general rule, ordinary car tyres shouldn’t be used on a caravan, unless the manufacturers guide has stated otherwise.

Even with reinforced tyres, a caravan tyres should be checked frequently due to the sheer weight they carry. Though caravans only tend to be used a few times a year, the tyres are still prone to deterioration. The weight of the caravan tends to take its toll on the tyre even when stationary, which is why these tyres should be replaced at least once every five years.
