How to correctly dispose of used engine oil
Thursday 24th August 2023
What is engine oil?
Motor oil, otherwise known as engine oil, is a substance used to lubricate internal combustion engines. It lubricates moving parts in the engine to help ensure your car runs smoothly, so that your vehicles engine does not seize up.
Why should engine oil be changed?
As time goes on, the oil picks up dirt which can change the composition of the chemical – making it less effective. This is why we recommend looking out for signs that your engine oil may not be performing correctly and replace when necessary.
Signs your engine oil should be replaced
There are many signs to look out for that can indicate your car requires an oil change. These include:
- Increased mileage
- Oil levels keep dropping
- Loud noises from the engine
- Oil change light appearing on the dashboard
- Smoke from exhaust
- Change in colour of the oil
Another way to tell if your car is due an oil change is to consult your owner’s manual. Your owner’s manual will outline the number of miles you can drive before your vehicle manufacturer recommends changing your oil.
Disposing of used engine oil
Before changing your engine oil, you should first determine what engine oil your vehicle requires. It is likely to be either semi-synthetic oil, synthetic oil or mineral oil. If you are changing your oil at home, we recommend having an oil spill kit and protective gloves on hand so that you can safely handle and clean up any mess. We also recommend a drip tray or a purpose-made sump canister to hold the oil safely as you drain it.
How to dispose of used engine oil?
It is a legal requirement to dispose of used oil correctly and safely, without causing any pollution. You should:
- Never pour oil down the drain or sink
- Avoid mixing used oil with any other automotive fluids or household chemicals
- Store any used oil in a clean, suitable metal or plastic container until you are able to dispose of it
- Ensure the container has a sealed lid to keep the used oil secure whilst transporting it to be disposed of
- Take the used oil to an oil bank to correctly and legally dispose of it
To find your local oil bank, we recommend using The Oil Care Campaign which is a joint initiative between UK environmental regulators, trade, industry and professional bodies that details the banks closest to you – helping you to dispose of used engine oil safely and legally.
We recommend booking in for an oil change and upgrade service from your local Formula One Autocentres today. Alternatively, take a look at our?specialist oil supplement?section or contact a member of our specialist team who will be happy to help.
