What does low oil pressure mean
Friday 26th January 2024
Your dashboard warning lights are a key indicator that there could be something wrong with your car that requires attention. And, your low oil pressure light is no different. In this guide, we’ll explain what you should do when your low oil pressure light comes on and what can cause it.
What causes low oil pressure?
There are several potential causes of low oil pressure, some are more serious than others. We will outline the primary reasons frequently encountered below.
Incorrect oil viscosity
The oil viscosity is the thickness of the oil. If the oil is too thick or too thin, your engine won’t be properly lubricated, which will trigger your low oil pressure light.
The right oil viscosity level for your car will be indicated in your car’s user manual. Typically, motor oil will be labelled with its viscosity, and is available as either single-grade or multi-grade.
- Single-grade oil: The viscosity is only rated at one temperature such as 30, or 30W for winter oil.
- Multi-grade oil: The viscosity is tested in both winter and summer conditions. The first number ends in a W indicating the winter viscosity and the second number indicates the viscosity at high temperatures.

Not having your oil changed regularly
The low oil pressure can indicate that you are due for an oil change, although your vehicle’s manual should indicate exactly how often an oil change is needed. However, several additional factors could result in you needing to get your oil changed more often, such as;
- Driving in stop-start traffic
- Driving in extreme temperatures
- Driving in areas with poor air quality
- Whether you use mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic oil
Make sure to get a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, or an interim service every 6 months or 6,000 miles where your engine oil will be changed, and your filter replaced.
Oil Pump Malfunction
A malfunctioning oil pump prevents oil from being pressurised and circulated around the engine. Over time, wear and tear can make your oil pump less efficient and eventually will mean your oil pump will need replacing.
Oil Leak or Low Oil
Oil leaks can cause your oil level to drop. If you don’t have enough oil in your car, it means your engine will not be lubricated which can result in serious damage to your engine. You should maintain the correct oil level in your vehicle to reduce the risk of damage. If you suspect your oil is leaking, our expert technicians will be able to help, locate your nearest autocentre.
Clogged Oil Filter
Dirty oil can cause your oil filter to get clogged, causing your oil pressure to drop. Your oil filter is replaced, and oil changed with every service - just one of the reasons you should get your car serviced regularly.
If your low oil pressure light comes on, it’s important to resolve the issue as soon as possible. If unresolved, it can cause problems with your engine. For more information about dashboard warning lights read our guide. Need to book a service? Find your nearest autocentre today.
