What’s included in an MOT?
For vehicles that come within the MOT scheme, testing is mandatory every year after the vehicle is 3 years old. Vehicles over 40 years old are exempt from MOT testing, provided that no substantial changes have been carried out on the vehicle in the last 30 years. Find out more about MOT testing and what’s involved with our easy to understand MOT guide.

How early can you have an MOT?
So, if your MOT is due, when can you book in for your test? Your MOT certificate is valid for 12 months, meaning you have exactly one year from your last test until the next one is due. However, you can MOT your vehicle up to a month (minus a day) before it’s expiry date. Learn more from our guide on ‘how early can I have an MOT?’.

How much does an MOT cost?

Can I drive without an MOT?
No - you are not legally allowed to drive your vehicle without a valid MOT certificate. The only exceptions to this rule are:
- If you’re driving to a pre-arranged MOT appointment.
- If you’re driving to have repairs conducted on your vehicle from a failed MOT test.
If you are caught driving without an MOT, you can receive a fine of up to £1,000 and your vehicle may be impounded. Additionally, this could also invalidate your insurance.

When does a new car need an MOT?
A new car does not need an MOT until it is 3 years old. Exceptions include emergency vehicles, taxis and vehicles with over 9 seats - these need an MOT after 12 months.
-
What do I need to take to my MOT?
You do not have to bring anything to an MOT with Formula One Autocentres apart from the car itself! It can be helpful to bring your current MOT certificate and your VOC vehicle registration document - however, our technicians will be able to locate these in our system if you are unable to do so.
-
How can I check my MOT history?
You can check your MOT history on the GOV.UK website. Simply enter your registration number and the website will bring up a comprehensive history of your past MOTs.
-
Is insurance valid without an MOT?
This depends on your insurance policy. If it is a requirement in said policy, your insurance will be invalidated and you will not be able to claim if you have an accident.
