Car Air Conditioning Service
At Formula One Autocentres, we offer air con regas (recharge) services amongst other car air conditioning services, keeping your vehicle fresh, cool, and operating at its optimal performance.
Air Conditioning Purification
Colder weather often brings misty windscreens. Using warm or cold dry air from your car’s air conditioning unit can clear your screen in seconds, but to achieve this your system must be working fully and efficiently. Keep your car fresh by neutralising bacteria, therefore getting rid of any unpleasant smells.
Both air conditioning services are available to buy online at very competitive prices. Plus, if your air conditioning isn't cooler after our Aircon De-Mist, then the service is free of charge!

Air Conditioning De-Mist*
It is recommended that you should recharge your air conditioning (regas) system with gas and lubricant every 2 years to keep it running efficiently. This is not included as part of a routine car service - so it can often be overlooked. We encourage you to have a car air conditioning recharge service if your car is over 2 years old.
*R134A Gas used at most Centres. R1234YF Gas available at selected centres. Additional charges may apply.
*Our vehicle registration look-up will try to identify the appropriate gas required for your vehicle, however, confirmation of this is the customer's responsibility.
Car Air Conditioning Cleaning
The Air Conditioning Clean from Formula One Autocentres service follows a similar series of steps to our De-Mist service but omits the re-charging stage. Our technicians start by removing all the harmful bacteria that can build up within the air conditioning system. By circulating a special cleaner through all air intakes and venting systems we remove any unpleasant smells and leave your car interior smelling clean and fresh. We recommend that this air con cleaning service is carried out once a year to keep your air conditioning system as clean as possible.
How does charging a car air conditioner work?
A drop in gas pressure will result in a loss of cooling efficiency, which will make your engine work harder and, in turn, use more fuel. That's why our Aircon De-Mist service ensures that your air conditioning system is working efficiently by testing the gas pressure to see if it has dropped. The process works as follows:
- Our fully trained technicians will take a temperature reading from your air conditioning system.
- Once all the old refrigerant gas, oil and dye have been removed, the whole system is cleaned and any moisture inside is removed.
- Once the system has been thoroughly cleansed our technicians will inject new oil, dye and refrigerant gas and take a temperature reading again to ensure that the De-Mist has made a difference to the cold air temperature.
Our process will ensure that your air conditioning system is working to its full potential. However, if our technicians find that the De-Mist has had no impact on the air conditioning temperature then the service will be FREE of charge.

How often should I get an air con regas?
You may need an air regas (also referred to as aircon recharge) if your air conditioning isn't as efficient as before or isn't functioning at all. It's advisable to have your air conditioning system inspected once your vehicle reaches 2 years of age, followed by regular annual checks thereafter. This practice guarantees optimal performance levels for your air conditioning system.
-
How long does an aircon regas take?
Recharging your car's air conditioning usually takes around 45 minutes.
-
Is a car air purification service necessary?
To maintain a pleasantly scented car, purification is essential! Car air conditioning systems are susceptible to bacterial growth. In contemporary vehicles, condensation accumulates on the evaporator coils, creating an optimal environment for bacteria due to the combination of moisture and the engine's warmth. Hence, the unpleasant odours coming from your air conditioning system typically result from mould, fungi, and microorganisms thriving behind your car's dashboard.
-
Should you use your aircon in the winter months?
Utilising your air conditioning system throughout the year is crucial for maintaining its optimal efficiency. A well-functioning air conditioning system can stop the demisting of your windscreen in cold, damp weather by circulating warm, dry air. Furthermore, regular usage of the air conditioning helps prevent bacterial growth thereby preserving a fresh scent in your car for an extended period.
-
What type of air con regas does my car take?
Car air conditioning systems typically utilise two refrigerants: R1234yf and R134a. You can identify which coolant your car requires by looking under the bonnet for a label which will indicate which type of gas is required.
It's important to mention that vehicles manufactured after 1st January, 2017, typically use R1234yf as the standard refrigerant. However, some vehicles transitioned to this refrigerant before 2017, so it's advisable to check if your car is older than this date.
-
Can I recharge my cars air conditioning myself?
While regas kits are available for purchase, we advise against buying one. Despite appearing to be slightly cheaper, the potential expenses incurred if complications arise far outweigh the cost of a standard air conditioning regas.
