Wheel Alignment vs Wheel Balancing

MOT tyre failure reasons

Wheel alignment and wheel balancing can be easily confused as they both deal with the positioning of your wheels. However, they both have different roles to play in the health of your car. Here at Formula One Autocentres, we offer both Wheel Alignment and Wheel Balancing services, so whichever service you need, you’re in safe hands.

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment is a maintenance procedure that ensures your wheels are positioned correctly in line with both each other and the frame of the vehicle. There are three elements of the wheel that are adjusted during wheel alignment:

  • Camber:  The camber is the way that the wheels tilt when viewed from the front of the vehicle. If it tilts inwards, it’s known as negative camber and if it tilts outwards it is known as positive camber. Proper camber alignment ensures even tyre wear and stable handling.
  • Toe: The toe alignment is the angle that the tyres point in when viewed from above. If the tyres point slightly inward, it's called toe-in; if they point outward, it's toe-out. Incorrect toe alignment can lead to uneven tyre wear and affect the vehicle's stability.
  • Caster: The caster angle is the forward or backward tilt of the steering axis when viewed from the side of the vehicle. Proper caster alignment helps with steering stability and return-to-centre behaviour of the steering wheel.

What are the benefits of wheel alignment?

Having correct wheel alignment improves your car’s handling, and steering and can help you save money through slower and more even tyre-wear

What causes wheel misalignment?

Wheel misalignment can be caused by disruptions to your suspension system, like hitting a kerb, pothole or speedbump at speed, or worn suspension. If you suspect any issues with your suspension, book a free suspension check at your nearest branch for peace of mind.

What is wheel balancing?

Wheel balancing is another important, regular procedure you need to maintain the health of your car. When your tyres are fitted to your car, there is usually some variance in how they distribute weight. This is because when they are manufactured, they are not 100% uniform. This is where wheel balancing comes in – adjustments are made to each wheel to ensure the weight of your car is distributed evenly.

What are the benefits of wheel balancing?

Keeping your wheels at the right balance prevents your car from feeling vibrations at higher speeds. You’ll also benefit from longer-lasting suspension components and tyres. Balanced tyres also contribute to better vehicle handling and stability, which is essential for safe driving.

What causes wheel imbalance?

Wheel imbalance is generally caused by the different variations in the distribution of weight around the wheel and tyres. If a tyre has been patched or repaired, it can cause imbalance along with wheel damage and general wear and tear to your wheels.

Whatever service you require, from tyres to servicing and MOT’s, we’re happy to help. And, if you need wheel balancing or wheel alignment, simply find your closest branch and book a visit today.
