What is an interim service?

An interim service is designed to be carried out every 6 months or after 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. An interim service is mainly carried out on vehicles that are used for longer journeys and in term drive more miles than average and typically takes around an hour and a half to complete, depending on the car model. An interim service does not replace an annual service, but addresses any issues that have been identified early on that may have been caused by driving more miles than average. Generally, long commutes and driving in congestion can lead to damages or faults to your vehicle.

What is checked during an interim service

An interim service generally checks levels of fluid such as brake fluid, anti-freeze coolant and screen wash. In addition to this, an interim service check also includes:

  • Exterior lights
  • Wipers & washers
  • Warning lights
  • Wheel alignment
  • Tyres
  • Shock absorbers
  • Brake pads and discs
  • Exhaust system
  • Road test

Do I need an interim service?

When considering whether to book an interim service, you should look at the miles you cover during the year. If you cover more miles than average, it is worthwhile booking an interim service every six months to ensure your car is functioning properly and performing as well as it should be. Depending on the model of the car and how accessible the necessary components are to reach, an interim service will highlight any parts of your vehicle that are wearing prematurely. If multiple issues are found, the time of the interim service may increase.

An interim service is recommended for all cars, particularly for those who drive more miles than average. This may be the case if you drive a lot for work or take longer commutes whereby you cover more miles and drive in congestion, all of which can damage components in your vehicle and can lead to a breakdown. An interim service helps to prevent premature wear and breakdowns by checking components that may not last in working condition for a full 12 months or 12,000 miles – or in other words, a full service.
