How long does a clutch last?

How to tell if your clutch is slipping

You should expect your clutch to last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, although well looked-after clutches can last much longer. The main influence on your clutch's lifespan is the way you drive your car. This guide explains why driving style matters, the signs your clutch might be ready for replacement, and top tips to make sure your clutch lasts as long as possible.

What affects clutch lifespan?

The most important thing to note is that driving style has a much bigger impact than mileage alone.

City driving generates heat and wear every time you stop, every time you hill start, and every time you crawl through slow traffic.

A car used mainly on motorways for long journeys where traffic is not an issue may reach 150,000 miles on its original clutch, whereas the same car used for the school run or daily commute, could need a replacement well before the 60,000-mile mark.

Towing also puts greater demand on the clutch every time it engages under load. Performance driving has a similar impact. Sharp, aggressive gear changes add stress to the pressure plate and release bearing , wearing them out.

The worst thing you can do for your clutch is rest your foot on the pedal while driving. This keeps the release bearing partially loaded, which wears it down continuously, even between gear changes.

It may also surprise you to learn that the size and weight of your vehicle have an impact too: a large diesel SUV would put more demand on the clutch than a small petrol hatchback would.

What are a clutch’s components?

A clutch consists of three main components:

  1. Friction disc
  2. Pressure plate
  3. Release bearing

In most cases, the friction disc is the first component to wear out. This is because its surface degrades gradually with every use, much like a brake pad.

5 Warning signs of a failing clutch

There are five key warning signs of a failing clutch to look out for:

  1. Rising biting point: If the clutch only engages near the top of the pedal, the friction disc may be wearing thin.
  2. Slipping under load: If the engine revs without an increase in speed, the disc is no longer transferring drive effectively.
  3. Burning smell: A burning smell after heavy use or a hill start, signals that the clutch is overheating.
  4. Heavy or spongy pedal: This could be caused by a hydraulic fault that could leave you unable to change gears.
  5. Shudder on take-off: If the car judders or shudders as the clutch engages, it can indicate oil or coolant contamination on the friction disc surface, or uneven wear.

How to extend clutch life span

Full engagement will have the biggest impact on making your clutch last longer. Completing gear changes quickly and removing your foot from the pedal immediately avoids unnecessary pressure, friction, and heat. On steep hills, use the handbrake rather than the clutch to reduce wear on the friction disc. Driving smoothly, rather than making sharp gear changes, extends the life of the pressure plate and release bearing.

Can I drive with a slipping clutch?

You should avoid driving with a slipping clutch. A slipping clutch cannot transfer full power from the engine to the wheels, which makes driving dangerous, especially if you need to overtake. Continued use can cause damage to other components too.

Is it better to replace the whole clutch or just worn parts?

The friction disc, pressure plate, and release bearing are usually replaced at the same time. The clutch is difficult and costly to access, so replacing all three components together is far more economical than the time and money spent on repeat trips to the garage.

Can an oil leak damage the clutch?

Yes. Oil contamination can cause shuddering on take-off and reduce the lifespan of your clutch. If you have an oil leak, the underlying cause will need fixing alongside the clutch replacement, otherwise the new clutch will fail too.
